This two-hour CLE program, sponsored by the VBA Young Lawyers Division, VBA at Karsh, Joint ADR Committee and John Marshall Center for Constitutional History & Civics, will devote 1.5 hours of a 2-hour time slot to ground its audience in classic mediation process and core characteristics of the process that should be observed even when the process is customized.
A combination of didactic and interactive presentation, it will highlight what makes mediation process effective to enable disputants to reach compromise and agreement and will teach skills used by the mediator. Such skills will be shown as helpful as well to attorneys in negotiation and to parties in conflict.
With such knowledge as a foundation, the program will prepare young lawyers who volunteer to teach the YLD Middle School Course in Virginia, “Building Bridges: Toward Civic Engagement, A Middle School Training in Mediation Skills.”
